The majority of Japanese maps in the Leiden University Library originate in the collections of Phillip Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), a surgeon of the Dutch East India Company who documented all aspects of Japanese life at an unprecedented scale during his stay in Japan from 1823 to 1829.
